So we're sitting in Benares, the restaurant, just about to tuck in, when my pal, Scott, whom I met on holiday in Greece, tells me about the time he and his wife, Sarah, went to Varanasi, the real Benares, on the Ganges. They took a boat out to see the sights, of people washing, bathing and praying. Their guide stopped and pointed to the water: the bloated body of a leper was floating past....
